The “New” Weymouth Sportsmen’s Club
In November 2002 The Weymouth Sportsmen’s Club,
established in 1929, had its club house burned to the ground, by a
fire of suspicious origin. Only the foundation remained.

Early in 2003 we began to visit nearly every shooting facility in
the area. Each of the clubs visited gave us more ideas for our new
building. In late 2006 the “new” Weymouth Sportsmen’s Club reopened.
Because of its close proximity to residents, we tried to make the
building resemble a large house. We are really pleased with the
results. Construction was done by the Ryder Development Corp. of
Weymouth.
Beside the outside appearance our new building
has
little in common with the old structure. In the new building we have
town water and sewage, four handicapped bathrooms and central
heating and air conditioning. The premises are protected by a
sprinkler system, monitored fire and security systems as well as
surveillance cameras.
Entrance to the club is on the ground floor into a ceramic tiled
lobby, with lounge sofa and chairs and a color T.V. Beyond that is a
large work room with a conference table and chairs, storage closets,
vending machine, gun cleaning facilities, dart board and another T.V
and stereo.
The shooting range has a new armor plate back stop rated to handle
all handguns
(lead and jacketed bullets) as well as rimfire rifles. The snail
bullet recovery system leaves little or no backsplash. The large six
position shooting booths each have overhead lights, electric target
carriers and steel in the walls between all stations. All shooting
is done from the booths, however, targets may be brought back to
shoot between 10 and 50 feet range. The range has its own heating
system as well as a double exhaust system.
The upstairs is accessible by two stairways, one with a handicapped
chair lift. The main level has two bathrooms, a large carpeted
function/meeting hall, offices and storerooms. The remainder of the
upper level is our new twenty yard indoor archery range. This room
with its high
ceiling
and many windows makes it light and bright for the eight shooting
lanes.
We currently have a Girl Scout troop in residence and Boy Scouts use
our outdoors for various activities. On Wednesday evenings from 7:00
– 9:00 p.m. our junior group meets. We have up to 30 members from
Weymouth, Quincy, Braintree and Abington. The youngsters, ages 11 to
18, learn gun safety first, rifle, handgun, gun cleaning, archery
and fishing. We begin each meeting with a shooting safety discussion
and include portions of the “Eddie Eagle” and “refuse to be a
victim” NRA program. We have up to twelve volunteer instructors for
various aspects of the Junior Program. Last June we ended our season
with Kayaks, can
oes
and fishing at Whitman’s Pond.
The Weymouth Sportsmen’s Club is open for members 7 days a week, 24
hours a day, with proximity card access. We have a membership cap of
300; however we still have a limited number of openings for
pistol/rifle or archery. The club has many certified Mass / NRA
Firearms Instructors offering training for Mass Pistol Permits, FID
cards and Boy Scout merit badges. We also offer NRA certified
instructor courses in pistol, rifle, shotgun, person protection,
home firearm safety and certified range safety officers.
If you wish to try out our ranges or tour the building, please call
781-335-9223 for an appointment. New junior members (ages 11 to 18)
are welcome Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
